***Attention to the Ambitious Youth of Swaziland***
As we launch our applications for the upcoming Swaziland Youth Leaders Fellowship Program, it is important to highlight some of the benefits of participating in such a program.
Education and experience go hand in hand in developing a skill set and understanding one’s objectives for their future. With that said, education and experience are not always exclusive of each other. There are opportunities that allow you to gain experience while being educated, giving an advantage for the chance to grow in a unique environment.
One such way is engaging in a fellowship. A fellowship is a program that is designed to support and encourage a group of people who meet to pursue a shared interest or goal.
Different fellowship programs have different missions and it’s a matter of finding one that suits you as a person; your character, your goals, your dreams, what you aspire to become and so on.
Being a part of a bigger purpose together with people who think along the same lines as you do helps with your comprehensive development as a leader, a critical thinker, having an entrepreneurial mindset and understanding how the world works. This comes into play when you’re applying at tertiary institutions and for scholarship programs as these are some of the things that they are looking for in their candidates.
There are also a number of activities done in fellowship programs for example case studies and assessments which put you in real life situations and you have to study these critically to come up with effective solutions to solve them. A lot of these involve team work which aid with communication and interpersonal skills. You learn how to address a large crowd without letting fear get in the way. It’s also a great way to learn new things and feed your mind with more knowledge. One is never too old to learn something new! And the interactions with different people from different walks of life and cultures is a fresh of breath air, and might change your perspective.
Fellowships introduce the net generation of aspiring professionals. With like-minded individuals brought together, fellowships offer invaluable networking opportunities to connects fellows with professionals, motivators and mentors, many of whom are fellowship alumni in one way or another. Through these connections, a fellowship enables one to cultivate relationships that can lead to new opportunities.
Different fellowships offer different experience but one thing in common is that they all offer challenges. They challenge you to meet high expectations that are relevant in the working world.
Other challenges expose you to new experiences and test your boundaries as an individual. The various challanges of a fellowship offer a unique chance for self-reflection, allowing one to think of where they are and where they would like to go to pursue their goals.
More than anything, fellowship provide one with essential tools to succeed both academically and professionally. Fellowships are not just an experience but a learning opportunity to utilise both in and out in the classroom.
Learning will not only come from the leaders and mentors, but also from other fellows who share different backgrounds and skills
